The Prizes Program at UC Berkeley (prizes@berkeley.edu) is an important forum for rewarding creative expression and scholarly achievement by Berkeley's finest students. Winners receive both recognition and a cash prize, which is coordinated with the winner's financial aid package. Prize competitions are open to students of any major. Successful, even prominent, artists and poets in our society found that winning an award at Berkeley was a pivotal experience in their artistic careers. Prizes are administered under the direction of the Academic Senate Committee on Prizes. Copies of the essays and poetry submissions chosen to receive prizes are archived at the Bancroft Library at the end of each year. Undergraduates in urban studies and in landscape architecture are also eligible to compete if teamed up with an architecture undergraduate. The Lemelson-MIT Program is soliciting referrals of potential undergraduate and graduate student applicants for the 2016 Lemelson-MIT Student Prize. The Lemelson-MIT Student Prize honors promising collegiate inventors around the country. The student prize is open to teams of undergraduate students and individual graduate students who have inventions in categories that represent significant sectors of the economy. Inventions can address opportunities in both developed and developing economies. Student applicants must be a full-time, matriculated, degree-seeking student in the Spring semester of 2016 at a U.S. college or university. Postdocs, audit students, and alumni are not eligible. Applicants should also be a named inventor on all inventions entered into the competition and should consider environmental sustainability as an important factor in their inventive work. Prize applications are due on Friday, April 3, 2015 via email to PRYTPRIZE@GMAIL.COM PRYTANEAN The Prytanean Society was founded at Berkeley in 1901 to recognize Cal women undergraduate students who demonstrate faith, service and loyalty to the University Of California, Berkeley. The Prytanean Prize is awarded to a woman student with junior standing in recognition of campus and community service as well as academic excellence (GPA Of 3.2 required). The recipient will receive at a $1250 cash prize that will be presented at the Prytanean Alumnae Brunch on Saturday, April 11, 2015, 9-12pm at the Bancroft Hotel. Graduating seniors, the application for the 2015 Judith Lee Stronach Baccalaureate Prize is now open and available online at stronach.berkeley.edu . Proposals for service, creative, or community-based research projects that engage social issues and contribute to the public good are welcome. Recipients may be awarded as much as $25,000. The 2015 Prize is open to Berkeley graduates in any area of study who are awarded an undergraduate degree in Fall 2014, Spring or Summer 2015. The application deadline is Monday, March 1, 2015.

  WEGE Competition - a team based design competition for US-based undergraduates, which this year will focus on the following challenge - How can we create a circular economy? Our very own Colin Webster was a judge on last year’s panel (the first year of the competition) and has been involved in helping to align this year’s challenge around the circular economy. Competitors enter in teams of five with cash prizes as follows: First Place - $15,000 divided among the 5 team members. Second Place - $10,000 divided among the 5 team members. What is your vision for the living cities of the 21st century? We invite you to enter the inaugural Living Cities: Residential Towers for the 21st Century Design Competition co-produced by Metropolis, the Steel Institute of New York, and the Ornamental Metal Institute of New York. Original entries must use a steel structural system with curtain wall enclosure and consider the needs of New York City's growing and diverse urban population along with the role that building characteristics play in overall constructability, sustainability, and creature comforts. The proposed site must be within the city's five boroughs. The winner will be awarded $10,000 and invited to present their proposal at the Institutes' conference in New York City. A young web startup ( theArchie.com ) founded by architecture students, and dedicated to the exchange of ideas, collaboration between students, teachers and architects, and looking for apprenticeships and work opportunities for the users of our site. theArchie.com organizes architecture and design contests for students and young professionals, in order to give them the chance of confronting a design project for themselves. It is good for students to apply what they know to a project that is closer to reality, rather than the theoretical approach which is often far removed from it. The competition will be judged by renowned architects, and rewarded with prize-money.
