On September 29, the UC Berkeley campus will transform into a day-long celebration of the arts, with Cal Performances' fourth Fall Free for All. The entire day is dedicated to bringing together the diverse and stunning talents of world-class musicians, dancers, and performers. Wander through Spieker Plaza and you'll catch the spirited Cal Band; step into Zellerbach, Hertz, and Wheeler halls and Alumni House to experience classical music, Medieval pop music, award-winning jazz, indie folk-rock, and so much more. Children will delight in taking part of shadow puppet creation, or picking up an instrument for the first time in our ever-popular Instrument Petting Zoo. Volunteering for WindAid is an opportunity to explore Peru, to enforce the necessity of renewable energy, to learn in depth the design, construction, and installation of a wind turbine, and see its social impact on a community, a school, or a microenterprise. WindAid started up over five years ago with the simple idea to bring energy to a school in the rural mountains of Peru. Since then they have achieved an incredibly diverse set of installations with more than 35 projects bringing electricity to hundreds of Peruvians. They have installed the first wind park in Peru, two mobile turbines – both on an automobile and a ship, and the Guinness World Record breaking Highest Wind Turbine in the World! WindAid has won awards from the BiD Network at The Hague in Holland, and the Ashden Award in London, England. We are excited to announce the launch of a new online chat game for UC Berkeley’s incoming class of 2013 (and everyone else on campus!), the Turing Test Tournament.   The Turing Test Tournament is an experimental chat-based game that will connect you with thousands of other Berkeley students in a contest of identity. Compete against other students in trying to tell human from machine, then join a chat yourself and see if you can convincingly perform a given role.The tournament is team-based and offers cash prizes for your favorite student organization, so join a guild of your choosing and start playing today! Project SMILE (Spreading Multiculturalism and Inspiring Leadership through Education) is UC Berkeley’s largest student-run mentoring organization. Reclaiming Our Voices at Cal: Womyn of Color Speak Out! Wednesday, November 7th 5:00-8:00pm Multicultural Community Center (Hearst Field Annex D-37) In 2007, the first Women of Color Festival "RECLAIM: Our Bodies, Minds, and Spirits," consisted of a day of events, hosted by GenEq, Multicultural Student Development and the Office of the Dean of Students, focusing on the experiences of women of color in our communities. It returned in 2009 and was cosponsored by GabNET, CalSLAM, RISE of UC Berkeley, Phi Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, GenEq, bridges Multicultural Resource Center and Cross-Cultural Student Development (CCSD). Combat burnout and stress to pursue balance, rest and happiness! As students, we need to learn how to process critiques in healthy ways, like peer to peer discussion. Our goal is to create a more successful, healthy CED student body. The Rest Stop is a safe space to hang out together and have healthy discussions about our struggles as CED students. We are all in this together; let’s actually talk what we are going through! (i.e. long nights, questioning abilities and future, feeling failure, issues about believing in your abilities) Drop by any week for some good food and real talk with CED students!
