Design the New York City Residential Tower of the 21st Century & Win $10,000! Enter the inaugural Living Cities: Residential Towers for the 21st Century Design Competition co-produced by Metropolis magazine, the Steel Institute of New York, and the Ornamental Metal Institute of New York. Original entries must use a steel structural system with curtain wall enclosure and consider the needs of New York's growing and diverse urban population along with the role that building characteristics play in overall constructability, sustainability, and creature comforts. The proposed site must be within the city's five boroughs. The winner will be awarded $10,000 and invited to present their proposal at the Institutes' conference in New York City. We have an exciting opportunity for our architecture students by ETH Zurich to develop full-scale housing prototypes that will be built in Cape Town. Kalu Yala is a sustainable community that will be built in the mountains about 45 minutes outside Panama City, Panama. Kalu Yala is founded on the core tenants of culture, new urbanism architecture, organic food, wellness, recreation, education, preservation, and conservation of the natural environment. The internship program allows students and young professionals to come to Panama and gain cultural exposure, work experience, and knowledge in order to create a project that will ultimately help shape this sustainable community. We plan to break ground this upcoming semester which will bring many opportunities for students to work with experts in various fields. The Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, caused catastrophic damage in northeastern Japan, particularly in the three prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima . One year later, rehabilitation and reconstruction work continues in the affected areas, but it is now clear that true recovery will take much longer than originally anticipated. Global Architecture Brigades at Berkeley is part of the world’s largest student-led and sustainable-development organization.  We travel to Honduras twice a year to develop sustainable health and education infrastructure where there is limited access to healthcare and higher education. During this time, we construct medical clinics and schools where students work alongside community members and local masons to do foundation framework, wall building, roof truss assembly, and much much more.
