Greetings from the SLC Language Exchange Program We are thrilled to invite students to join our Fall 2019 LEP Global Book Club ! Each semester, we expand our perspectives by engaging with literature from around the world. As we join the campus in commemorating 400 Years of Resistance to Slavery and Injustice , this semester we will be reading Zora Neale Hurston’s Barracoon: The Story of the Last "Black Cargo." Written in 1931 and published just last year, Barracoon chronicles Hurston’s conversations with Cudjo Kossula Lewis, one of the last survivors of the Atlantic Slave trade. By staying true to Kossula’s spoken vernacular, Hurston provides an authentic and intimate look at his life–from his upbringing in West Africa, to his horrific experience crossing the Middle Passage, to his significant role in founding Africatown. Are you interested in earning one unit for reading Turing's Cathedral and participating in this year's On the Same Page activities? Then sign up for L&S 10, the new On the Same Page course. The course is still open to enrollments until September 24. You will complete all course requirements by the end of October, leaving you free to focus on your other courses through midterms and finals. And, best of all, you will be earning credit for participating in engaging activities such as socially annotating a text, attending campus events, and discussing the book with faculty and other students. This course is open to all undergraduates, from any college. And if you have not yet received a free copy of Turing's Cathedral, you can receive one just for enrolling in L&S 10.

LGBT 100: Trans* Studies Tuesdays/Thursdays 3:30-5 pm/190 Barrows Instructor: Christine Quinan This course will explore understandings and experiences of trans bodies and identities, including transgender, transsexual, and gender-variant individuals and communities. While the course will be largely U.S.-focused, we will approach topics related to gender non-normativity through a trans-cultural lens. We will begin by historically situating gender and sex in conceptual frameworks, looking at sexology research that emerged in the late-19th and early 20th centuries. We will then move to examining a first-person account of transition alongside secondary sources that touch upon a wide range of issues, including pathologization, desire, and visibility. Finally, we will discuss how gender is controlled, confined, and policed by structural institutions, including the legal system, the medical establishment, and the prison industrial complex.
