San Francisco Tenants’ Rights Internship (Unpaid) 4-8 hours / week  Location: 2301 Mission Street Background There is an acute housing crisis in San Francisco, and we believe that strengthening tenant and immigrant rights is one powerful way to challenge gentrification and displacement, along with grassroots organizing for social change. We are a multi-racial organization bringing together African-American and Latino communities to fight for the changes our communities need right now, and organizing with a transformational vision for the future. Explore a social justice issue, immerse yourself in a community, and apply your knowledge. Alternative Breaks takes teams of students to various areas throughout the Western United States on 1-2 week service learning trips, exploring the complexities of social issues by allowing students to work, eat, and live with people who are directly impacted by racism, poverty, and other injustices. Students prepare for trips through a 2-unit DECal. Financial aid is available for all trips. The UC Botanical Garden's Fall Plant Sale is coming up on Sunday, September 28. In the past, college students have volunteered to help with this event in exchange for community service hours or just for fun. I n June 2014, the Planning Department will launch the first citywide Public Life Surveys of Parklets and Plazas. We are also coordinating post-occupancy evaluations of Leland, upper Valencia, and Jefferson Streets. We are seeking volunteers to attend one training and spend at least two hours collecting data at project sites. Volunteers will count pedestrians and cyclists, record activities, and interview pedestrians. Volunteering for WindAid is an opportunity to explore Peru, to enforce the necessity of renewable energy, to learn in depth the design, construction, and installation of a wind turbine, and see its social impact on a community, a school, or a microenterprise. WindAid started up over five years ago with the simple idea to bring energy to a school in the rural mountains of Peru. Since then they have achieved an incredibly diverse set of installations with more than 35 projects bringing electricity to hundreds of Peruvians. They have installed the first wind park in Peru, two mobile turbines – both on an automobile and a ship, and the Guinness World Record breaking Highest Wind Turbine in the World! WindAid has won awards from the BiD Network at The Hague in Holland, and the Ashden Award in London, England. I'm excited to be contacting you today to announce our plans to install a wind turbine at the highest altitude in the world! However, this can only happen with the enthusiasm and involvement of volunteers ! Hi Everyone, Student-to-Student Peer Counseling is holding info sessions this week for students interested in being peer counselors. SSPC offers walk-in and phone-in services to other Berkeley students who want to talk about a range of difficulties, such as stress or depression. Being a peer counselor is a rewarding and educational experience, and SSPC is a very supportive and social community. You only need to attend one of the two info sessions below, where we will give you more information about the club and hold short interviews. No prior counseling experience is needed.
