Anthropology 189: Disability Ethnography and Design M, W  10:00 am - 11:29 pm Professor Karen Nakamura Kroeber 221 4 credits This course explores disability worlds in the Bay Area through the ethnographic field methods, visual anthropology, and design anthropology. What does it mean to be disabled? How are disability organizations in the Bay Area trying to accomplish social and political change? What is the disability world? Through close participant observation and iterative design, students will work closely with local organizations and disabled individuals on projects ranging from the creation of ethnographic and documentary films, the construction of assistive devices, and the documentation of disabled lives and history.  Aside from the weekly meetings, students will be expected to spend considerable time embedded in the community and to work on joint and individual projects for the course.  There are no course prerequisites and students at any level ...

Spring 2018 Course with Seats ESPM 150—Green Water, Brown Ground, and Global Food Security (3)   This course will explore the role played by water and soil resources in the production of agricultural commodities to meet current and future world food demand, including how differences in resource requirements between plant-based and animal-based commodities play out in respect to the food-soil-water nexus. The course will also address the latest information about whether optimizing water and soil management alone can achieve a significant increase in global food production without an expansion of either agricultural land or the volume of water withdrawn for irrigation. Prerequisite : Familiarity with the water cycle and soil characteristics at an introductory level will be helpful. The 8th annual Circus will be held on March 2, 2018 at the College of Environmental Design. This event is designed for you, CED’s students! Our goal is to create a venue to highlight your academic work to distinguished visitors, critics, and alumni. This event will also give you the opportunity to personally connect with these visiting leaders in the field of environmental design. We want everyone to participate. So, to make it easy: Classes will be CANCELLED on Friday, March 2nd Even though classes are cancelled, it will be a busy day. If your work is being presented to visiting reviewers, you are required to be present (whether or not you yourself are making the presentation). Even if your work is not the focus of a session with reviewers, we strongly encourage you to attend all of Friday’s events and seize the day as a networking and learning opportunity.
