*Data Science Pathways*
Are you a new Cal student interested in critical thinking with data? Hoping to get more quantitative and computing skills? Looking for ways to advance your research in your major? Thinking about jobs or graduate school?
Data Science at Berkeley has pathways for you. You can enroll this fall in exciting entry-level classes without previous data science experience, even if this is the first time you've heard of the field at Cal.
*Foundations of Data Science*
Berkeley's Foundations of Data Science course (COMPSCI/STAT/INFO 8, familiarly Data 8) is designed for any student at Cal. By working hands-on with data to answer interesting questions, it teaches core computational and statistical concepts. It’s the same class whether it’s listed in Computer Science, Statistics, or Information. In Fall 2017, enroll in COMPSCI C8. *What Makes Data 8 Unique?*
* Real-world Applicability - Data science students are really learning to study the world by using data. Data 8 is rooted in engaging real-world examples and uses actual data sets from a broad range of fields.
* Satisfy Requirements - Data 8 lets you satisfy quantitative reasoning requirements in L&S and quantitative/statistics requirements in nearly all majors (data.berkeley.edu/education-p
* Accessibility - Designed for students without previous stats or CS experience. No prerequisites.
* Support - Lots of support is available (labs, small-group tutoring sessions, etc.) for any student who wants more help.
*Connector Courses*
Connector courses let students relate core concepts from the Foundations course to questions that they’re passionate about. Each is a smaller class and focuses on a particular area of study. Offered by instructors across departments from social science to engineering, from science to humanities, connectors are optional but highly encouraged. They are designed to be taken at the same or after the Foundations course (co-requisite/prerequisite).
