CRIMINALIZING VICE:
THE “COMMON GAMING HOUSE” IN COLONIAL SINGAPORE
Lee will discuss a specific nexus of power/knowledge in the project of criminalizing vice in colonial Singapore. The task faced by the colonial administrators was not just to suppress vice, but to protect law itself from its own excesses. The Common Gaming House that targeted illegal gambling was a political technology that tried to distribute the weight of punishment effectively and righteously, yet always reserving a space of tolerated illegalities where the distinction between crime and vice was ambiguous.

The socio-political and economic atmosphere of Calabar, Nigeria is one which, for centuries, has tended to be decentralized in nature. Consisting of polynucleated and fragmented zones that were loosely tied together by informal juridical systems and cultural codes, the architecture and urbanism of this cosmopolitan city in many ways foreshadowed the splintering forms of urbanism emerging globally today.

How does the seemingly inert, utilitarian, and highly rational space effect the satisfying consumption experiences that earn Costco its cultural cachet?
