City Government Zero Waste Associate (9922 Environmental Associate)

*Program Background: The mission of the City and County of San Francisco Department of the Environment (www.sfenvironment.org) is to improve, enhance, and preserve the environment, and to promote San Francisco's long-term environmental sustainability.
*Position Description: The City Government Zero Waste program at SF Environment helps San Francisco City departments implement, monitor and maintain waste reduction, recycling and composting programs. The Mayor and Board of Supervisors have set high landfill diversion and other goals for City departments and calls on them to lead by example. The City Government Zero Waste Associate will report to the City Government Zero Waste Assistant and administer compliance with various aspects of the Resource Conservation, Surplus Disposal and Mandatory Recycling and Composting Ordinances. Responsibilities include to:
-Provide comprehensive assistance to City departments to implement and maintain waste reduction, recycling and composting programs by conducting site visits, evaluating current programs, making recommendations for improvements, analyzing facility service level and billing, communicating with service providers (Recology, the Arc SF, and others), training custodians, educating City staff, and assisting with on-site bin set up and labeling.
-Promote reuse within City Government by managing the Virtual Warehouse (warehouse.sfenvironment.org) - a materials exchange program for City-owned surplus furniture, equipment, and electronics.
-Improve and maintain the existing Virtual Warehouse system and database.
- Lead marketing and outreach efforts for the Virtual Warehouse.
-Promote scrap metal recycling in City departments by managing the scrap metal recycling contract, tracking tonnage, and providing outreach as needed.
-Maintain and improve in-house recycling, composting and waste reduction programs at SF Environment and ensure employees are trained on zero waste procedures.
-Assist the Zero Waste Program with other projects including coordination of zero waste events, outreach and policy research.
-Provide administrative support as necessary.
