Institute of European Studies Fellowships DEADLINES SOON

The Institute of European Studies (IES) is pleased to announce a call for applications for several grants and fellowships for UC Berkeley undergraduates, graduates, postgraduates, faculty and lecturers undertaking research and study in Europe. This year, three new grants were added: the Helmut Kohl Award for research on Germany and Europe as well and scholarships stemming from new exchange agreements with Jena University and Regensburg University. 


FOR UNDERGRADUATES

FLAS Fellowships for European Language Study for Academic Year and Summer Courses at UCB and Abroad. Undergraduates are eligible to apply. More information here--Due January 29, 2018
Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union in Cooperation with IES. Students may pursue a wide range of topics that reflect their interest, expertise, and past research. Topics may deal with any aspect of European integration or transatlantic relations. Hotel accommodations and meals covered for up to 2 authors of accepted student papers. Student conference participants may compete for an all expense paid study trip to Brussels. Paper proposals. More information here-- Due February 16, 2018

European Studies Undergraduate Paper Prize. As IES is a member of the Council of European Studies, the European Studies Undergraduate Paper Prize is given for the best advanced research paper written in English on any subject in European Studies as part of an undergraduate university degree program. Two prizes are awarded, one for a paper in the Humanities and one for a paper in the Social Sciences. Each prize winner will receive a check for $500. Visit CES to apply by February 1, 2018.

UC Berkeley-Max Kade Summer German Language Study Travel Fellowships. Undergraduates majoring or minoring in German can apply for a Max Kade Travel Fellowship for $1000 each to support summer German language study in Berlin. IES Portuguese Studies Program Pinto/Fialon Scholarship. 
The Pinto/Fialon Scholarships for undergraduates are open to Portuguese-American and Portuguese students at UC Berkeley (Portuguese-American students are defined as having at least one Portuguese grandparent.) More information here--Due  May 15, 2018

IES Center for  British Studies Kirk Underhill Undergraduate Prize. 
This prize of $250 will be awarded for the best paper on a British Studies topic written by a UC-Berkeley undergraduate in the senior year. Students need the nomination of a UCB Faculty member. More information here--Due May 31, 2018

IES Irish Studies Program Summer Research Grants. The Irish Studies Program offers two $2500 awards for registered UC Berkeley undergraduate or graduate students to study or perform research in or about Ireland. Application details are available here.--Due February 1, 2018

IES Center for British Studies Travel Grant. This grant of $2,000 will be awarded to second or third year UC-Berkeley graduate students before their qualifying exam to travel to Britain to conduct research and develop contacts that will help them prepare a dissertation proposal.  More information here -- Due February 1, 2018

IES Center for British Studies Dissertation Grant. This grant of $2,000 will be awarded to graduate students who have defended their dissertation prospectus to finish research in the UK and aid them in completing their dissertation. More information here -- Due February 1, 2018
IES Gerald D. and Norma Feldman Graduate Student Dissertation Fellowship. This fellowship is in the amount of $3,000 and is open to students at UC Berkeley writing their dissertations on topics related to Europe and the European Union. Topics should focus on political, historical, economic, social, cultural, and intellectual issues, or public policy in contemporary Europe. IES Helmut Kohl Award in German and European Studies. This award will amount to $2000 for UC Berkeley students writing their dissertations on German and European topics. This grant may be used to supplement external awards. More information here -- Due February 1, 2018
IES Berkeley-Austria Dissertation and Pre-Dissertation Research Award Program. This award will amount to $6000 for visits of up to three months. Successful applicants will receive a temporary affiliation with the host institution in Austria. More information here -- Due February 1, 2018

Two pre-dissertation or dissertation research fellowships of Eur 360 per month for up to 5 months plus free guest housing will be awarded forUC-Berkeley Graduate Students wishing to explore dissertation research opportunities in the Berlin area and western Poland. IES Berkeley-Greifswald Graduate Fellowship. The fellowship amounts to EUR 650 per month for short term (1-3 month) or long term (5-10 month) research stays. Eligible activities include regular semester courses, the University of Greifswald's Summer School, dissertation research with the support of a University of Greifswald faculty mentor. forIES Berkeley-Regensburg Research Award. The Fellowship amounts to EUR 1000 per month for 3 month stays.  Open to Graduate Student Applicants from all disciplines on the UC-Berkeley campus. Students must identify a faculty supervisor at Regensburg. More information here -- Due February 1, 2018
IES Berkeley-University of Luxembourg Research Fellowship. UC Berkeley graduate students exploring dissertation research opportunities in Luxembourg are eligible for a fellowship of 1500 EUR per month funding a stay of up to 3 months in Luxembourg. For application details click here--Due February 1, 2018

IES Center for British Studies Dissertation Research Grant. UC Berkeley graduate students who have defended their dissertation prospectus and seek support for travel for the purposes of dissertation research in the UK are eligible. More information available here.--Due February 1, 2018.

FOR POSTGRADUATES

IES Berkeley-Cologne Postdoctoral Research Awards. The Berkeley-Cologne Fund also offers one post-doctoral fellowship for a six-month research stay in Cologne. Competition for this Fellowship is open to post-doctoral students in any field of study, but especially in Archaeology, History, Art History, Comparative Literature, and National Literatures of Europe.  The successful applicant will be awarded a stipend of EUR 1840 per month. UC Berkeley-Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet Munich Program for the Humanities. The cooperation supports the exchange of post-docs in the field of the humanities. Apply directly with the LMU


FOR FACULTY and LECTURERS

IES Foreign Language Teacher Travel Grants. The Institute of European Studies is pleased to announce a competition for travel grants for UC-Berkeley foreign language instructors of European languages to support the acquisition of new information and training in language pedagogy. The competition is open to lecturers only. All lecturers teaching European languages at UC Berkeley, including Turkish, can apply. However, lecturers in Slavic languages and other Eastern European languages (Hungarian, Armenian) should contact the Institute of Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies for support. Awards are for amounts up to $1500. Applications should include a proposal statement describing the applicant's planned travel and how it will enhance language instruction at UC-Berkeley, a budget and a CV. IES- University of Bordeaux-UC Berkeley Partnership. All UC faculty, researchers, administrators and students involved in collaboration projects with Bordeaux are eligible to apply for up to EUR 10,000 through the University of BordeauxApplications must be submitted by the Bordeaux partner. One grant per year has been earmarked for UC Berkeley.
