New Scholarship and Leadership Opportunity

Dear campus community:

We are excited to be launching an ambitious new campus program to support and
nurture students who are committed to public service - one of the hallmarks of the
Berkeley experience.

Made possible by the generosity of Mimi Haas, and named in honor of her late
husband, the Peter E. Haas Public Service Leaders Program seeks to grow a new
generation of leaders devoted to serving society. Peter Haas was a legendary Cal
alumnus and friend to UC Berkeley who was known for his deep commitment to helping
others.

In its inaugural year, the program will provide scholarships and leadership training
to up to 20 undergraduates who are eligible for financial aid and demonstrate a
commitment to public service. By cultivating student leaders, the program will have
an ever-broader impact in helping those students to engage their peers in public
service.

This innovative program will provide need-based scholarships ranging from $2,500 to
$5,000, reducing the financial contribution expected of students and their families
and making it possible for students to volunteer more time in service activities.
Students who are selected will participate in a year-long leadership development
program through the Cal Corps Public Service Center.

Applications are now being accepted for the program, and the deadline for current
students to apply is Tuesday, May 1 at 4:00 p.m. More information and applications
can be found on the Cal Corps Public Service Center website:
http://publicservice.berkeley.edu

Please spread the word and let potential candidates with a strong commitment to
public service and demonstrated financial need know about this new program.

With warm regards.

Yours sincerely,
Robert J. Birgeneau, Chancellor
